Construction and Engineering

Civil engineers are also people’s shelter, drinking water, energy, transportation, etc. aims to meet their needs. The houses, hospitals, schools, roads, bridges, dams, ports and similar structures that we see around us are parts of the “built environment” designed and built by civil engineers. Civil engineers develop structures and infrastructure systems that are resistant to earthquakes, floods, landslides and similar natural disasters; They produce engineering solutions that will reduce the impact of problems faced by humanity, such as global warming, and increase the quality of life of people without disturbing the balance of nature. For example, buildings with net zero energy that produce as much energy as their own consumption, smart bridges and buildings produced with 3D printers using recyclable materials are structures that are being developed by civil engineers in accordance with sustainable development goals. Civil engineering is a profession where each building is specially designed according to conditions and needs, where creativity plays an important role. While constructing structures and systems, civil engineers also consider criteria for technical performance such as usage, durability, reliability, and socio-economic and environmental effects, worker health and work safety. Civil engineers work with experts from various engineering fields such as geology, geophysics, maps, electrical-electronics and mechanical engineering and from different disciplines such as architecture, city-regional planning, economics, and sociology. For example, in the construction of a dam, in the selection of the dam site, the geological structure, hydrological and meteorological characteristics of the basin and similar issues as well as the effects of the dam on the local people, climate and natural life are evaluated by interdisciplinary project teams. After the economic feasibility studies are completed, the topographic and geological features of the dam site are determined by the survey engineers and geological engineers. Hydrologists evaluate groundwater. If ground conditions need to be improved, the ground is strengthened by civil engineers specialized in geotechnical fields. The sizing of the dam is carried out by civil engineers with computerized analyzes, taking into account earthquake resistance and current regulations. Electro-mechanical design of the dam is carried out by mechanical and electrical-electronic engineers. Detailed work plans are prepared in order to complete the construction in the stipulated time and cost, and construction sites are established where hundreds or even thousands of people will work, depending on the size of the project. Construction methods and processes at the construction site are planned and managed by civil engineers. Civil engineering, starting from the emergence of an infrastructure or superstructure project as an idea, including all processes from economic feasibility examination, structural design, construction, maintenance-repair, operation, even demolition and reuse, technical knowledge and competence at every stage, with people from different disciplines. It is an exciting profession that requires the ability to work, effective communication skills and creativity. One of the greatest personal rewards of a civil engineer is his satisfaction with the permanent structures he has created to create a safer and more livable environment.
